Webinar Recording: Plastic Cup & Container Recycling Update

Plastic take-out cups and containers, including clamshells, thermoforms, trays, and tubs, can be made of various plastic resins like polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) providing a convenient and safe way to take home our meals and treats. However, not all container shapes and resins have had equal success in being recycled.

On October 3, 2024, FPI hosted a webinar featuring researchers and representatives from a material recovery facility (MRF) and a plastics processor. They provided highlights from recent research on PET and PP recycling, information on bale specifications, insights on the latest material sorting in MRFs, and examples of transforming recycled plastics into new products.

Panelists Included:

  • Ashley Elzinga, Director of Sustainability & Outreach, FPI (moderator)

  • Katy Ricchi, Consultant Engineer, RRS

  • Tonya Randell, Public/Private Engagement Manager, Stina, Inc.

  • Jeffrey Snyder, Sr. VP Recycling & Sustainability, Rumpke Waste & Recycling
